A DRF Luftrettung chopper airlifted a man who had been injured whilst working on a wind turbine on 22 August. The 31-year-old worker had been carrying out repairs on the turbine in the north of Lower Saxony, Germany, when a transport basket came loose from its fastenings and hit the man from behind, flinging him ‘with great force several metres through the air’.
Ground ambulances that arrived at the scene quickly realised that the man needed to be swiftly airlifted to the nearest hospital. A chopper then left from DRF Luftrettung’s base in Bremen, 30 km (20 miles) away from the accident site. The crew, consisting of pilot Adriana Langer, doctor Elisabeth Weber and paramedic Karl Gröling, assessed the man and found him to have spinal injuries, and so took ‘special caution’ when moving him, according to Langer.
The worker was then swiftly transported to Bremerhaven Reinkenheide Hospital where he received further treatment.
