Air ECMO capability for China
China’s Deer Jet Medical Co. Ltd. has launched a joint programme with the Renmin Hospital of Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, which the air ambulance provider said is the first hospital with the expertise to transport patients on portable extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines in the Greater China region. Deer Jet Medical has therefore become the only air ambulance operator in China with dedicated jets able to fly ECMO patients nationwide and overseas, it said.
Renmin Hospital initiated the country’s first ECMO programme by creating a special task force consisting of experienced anaesthesiologists and specialist doctors across different departments several years ago, and has so far evolved into the country’s largest ECMO-capable medical centre with the ability to treat over 50 ECMO patients per year.
Haikuan Lu, chairman and CEO of Deer Jet Medical, explained: “Both parties intend to create a ‘super expressway’ in the air to transport patients. However, this is the type of transport that is the most clinically complicated and logistically challenging, if compared with our routine medical evacuation missions. Such a task can only be fulfilled by the best medical crew onboard carrying state-of-the-art equipment on the back of guaranteed aviation capability.”
The medical crew will be composed of international aeromedical experts from Deer Jet medical and ECMO specialist doctors from Renmin Hospital.
