The Italian Air Force reports that its Flight Test Unit (Reparto Sperimentale Volo) has completed certification and testing of a bio-containment system onboard a KC-767A transport plane. The system comprises aircraft stretcher transit isolators and related medical equipment for the transport of highly infectious patients.
The programme was launched at the request of the Air Force’s Logistics Command Health Service. The Flight Test Unit has led a project team that has also benefited from the skills of the Flight Test Center workshop, the Main Infirmary of the Pratica di Mare Air Base, the Aerospace Medical Division and 14th Wing. The work has included developing mechanical interfaces and locking systems, as well as electrical redundancy, with 12 new internal configurations of the aircraft being certified.
The Air Force said that the work, which was carried out over three weeks, has provided it with the operational capacity to undertake missions in Europe and worldwide, with a guarantee of a high level of safety for medical staff.
