NSRI pays tribute to pilot

South Africa’s National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), along with local emergency services, have paid tribute to Cameron Dalziel, a 43-year-old pilot and rescue swimmer who was among those killed in the crash of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 in Ukraine.
Dalziel began his career as a lifeguard with Lifesaving South Africa, stationed at Umhlanga, and was among the first helicopter rescue swimmers to join up with the John Rolfe surf rescue helicopter. Then, when the programme was superseded by Nokia Surf Rescue, he jumped at the chance to take on a piloting role, flying rescue missions along the Durban coastline. Most recently, he flew for Mozambique-based CHC, and had applied for a transfer to work for them in Malaysia – he was on his way back to Malaysia after completing simulator training in Amsterdam when his plane was shot down. He has been described by family, friends and colleagues as a ‘highly committed super pilot, a larger than life character who lived life to the fullest’.
