At the end of 2014, Swiss air rescue agency Rega successfully completed instrument flight rules (IFR) certification for its mountain helicopter – an important step, said the organisation, towards realising its vision of saving people whatever the weather, as relying on visual flight rules (VFR) means that tricky conditions such as snow and fog can make missions very difficult, if not impossible, to undertake. The organisation also hopes that by the end of 2015, all of its crews will have successfully completed IFR training, making use of its Da Vinci Flight Simulator, which facilitates the completion of a large percentage of the practical training, saving on fuel consumption and, consequently, much-needed funds.
