On 15 June, the US Coast Guard (USCG) rescued two people who had been reported missing when their 21-ft (6.4-m) fishing boat sank in the sea around one mile west of Kiptopeke State Park, Virginia, US. The boat had sank at approximately 21:30 hrs on 14 June, and a distress call was relayed to Coast Guard Sector Hampton Rocks from 911 dispatchers at 03:25 hrs the following morning. A Coast Guard Response Boat and MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, along with a Virginia Marine Resources Commission boat, were dispatched to assist. One of the three onboard the fishing boat had already swam to shore and alerted 911, while a second also managed to swim to sure later in the night – he was found at approximately 04:00 hrs and taken by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Finally, the Jawyhawk crew located the third person at around 07:00 hrs, hoisting him aboard and taking him to the same hospital. All survivors were suffering from hypothermia, but none had sustained life-threatening injuries.
“The fact that these men were wearing life jackets greatly increased their chances of survival,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Barbay, operations unit controller at the Coast Guard’s 5th District Command Center.
