Fatal ANB crash in Grand Manan
Ambulance New Brunswick has announced a paramedic and pilot lost their lives in a crash on Grand Manan Island on 16 August.
Ambulance New Brunswick announced that long-standing paramedic William Mallock lost his life while on duty on 16 August. Mallock, a paramedic with close to 20 years of service, was onboard an Atlantic Charters aircraft, the contracted air service for Grand Manan Island, which crashed in a wooded area near the airport in Grand Manan shortly after 05:00 hrs.
One of the plane’s two pilots also lost his life in the accident; a second pilot and a registered nurse survived the crash. The flight crew was returning to Grand Manan Island following a patient transfer from Grand Manan Hospital to the Saint John Regional Hospital when the accident occurred.
ANB’s interim president, Paul Ward, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of those whose lives were lost – an Ambulance New Brunswick paramedic and a pilot from Atlantic Charters. William, or Billy as he was known by his friends, and the pilot lost their lives serving the public and helping patients. We also want to express our sympathies and the hope for a speedy and complete recovery to the two others that suffered injuries in the accident.”
ANB said that despite the incident it remained committed to the provision of ambulance services for all residents of the province of New Brunswick and that it would continue to provide air ambulance services with its dedicated air ambulance, with support from various mutual aid agreements. Additional ground ambulance crews were assigned to provide extra support to the population of Grand Manan.
