A crew from the US Coast Guard was called out to rescue a 65-year old man near Posliedni Point in Afognak Bay, Alaska, after he suffered a heart attack whilst on his anchored vessel with his wife.
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter teamed up with the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Naushon to rescue the man after receiving notification of his condition from his wife. A Sector Anchorage search and rescue mission deemed that a medevac would be needed due to the man’s condition.
“With unreliable communications between the command centre and the couple and the severity of the man’s condition, we knew we needed to get on scene as quickly as possible,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Lindsey Helmbrecht, a Sector Anchorage watchstander. “The Naushon crew was patrolling in the area and was able to take the couple on board and provide assistance while awaiting the Jayhawk crew to complete the medevac.”
The man was then hoisted to awaiting medical personnel in Kodiak. His wife was transported back to shore in the Coast Guard Cutter Naushon.
