RACQ LifeFlight Rescue was called upon to airlift a critically injured 85-year-old man who had been in a car accident near Toowoomba, Australia.
The man was driving down a dirt road when he crashed into a tree and his car burst into flames. Fortunately for the driver, two army choppers were on patrol at the time and called the emergency services after spotting the burning car.
The location of the accident made it hard for emergency services to reach the man, and the LifeFlight critical care doctor and QAS flight paramedic that arrived at the scene were forced to walk through 500 m (0.3 miles) of bush and dirt road, and climb a barbed wire fence, in order to reach the patient.
By the time emergency services were able to reach the man, he was in a very serious condition and had suffered burns to approximately 50 per cent of his body, LifeFlight reported.
The man was dragged out of the vehicle by an Army trainee pilot, which Andrew Riches, LifeFlight Toowoomba base manager, said was ‘an incredible rescue’. “She was very, very brave,” he commented.
LifeFlight report that the man was then airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital.
