FDN beefs up its communication capabilities

Flying Doctors Nigeria (FDN) has entered into an agreement with a UK-based call centre to improve its lifesaving air transport services across Africa, in the hope that the partnership will eradicate the risk of delay in getting through to an emergency operator. Currently, such delays exist due to communication glitches that are still occasionally experienced due to problems with local infrastructure, said the air ambulance operator.
FDN explained: “This is a risk Flying Doctors is unwilling to allow in its emergency support services. [We] believe that the stable telecoms platform provided by the UK call centre will further enhance [our] emergency response capabilities, enabling [us] to react quicker to local and international emergencies, and speeding up the dispatch of lifesaving air transport for ill and injured patients. The UK call centre will run 365 days a year, 24 hours per day.”
Dr Ola Orekunrin, managing director of FDN, commented on the decision: “There have been examples of patients not receiving urgent medical attention because of communications failure. Even one single such case is one too many. Our decision to team up with a UK call centre will ensure that any patient needing medical aid will have options in reaching an emergency operator 24 hours a day. Patients in international locations will find it easier to connect with our emergency services. This will allow Flying Doctors to provide quicker medical care, saving valuable lives.”
