Spanish Air Force helicopters belonging to the HELISAF detachment in Herat, Afghanistan, flew their last flight on 13 October. The detachment began operations in May 2005, primarily conducting aeromedical evacuation missions in Afghanistan’s western provinces, and over the last eight years HELISAF has totalled 5,910 flight hours and rescued over 1,000 patients. Known in the Herat area as ‘the sound of life’, as the noise of the helicopter rotor blades is a sign that help is on the way, HELISAF personnel say that they are proud to have inspired and encouraged soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghanistan to continue with their reconstruction efforts, by providing the reassurance that no matter what the situation, its helicopters would fly in to save their lives.
