The US Air Force (USAF) has reported that four of its airmen were killed when a HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter crashed at around 18:00 hrs on 7 January near Salthouse on the UK’s Norfolk coast. The aircraft, a combat search and rescue vehicle assigned to the 48th Fighter Wing, was performing a low-level training mission along the coast when the crash occurred.
Based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, UK, the 48th Fighter Wing houses the 56th Rescue Squadron’s HH-60G combat search and rescue helicopters, which provide worldwide rapidly deployable combat rescue and reaction force response. The Pave Hawks were heavily involved in Libya throughout 2011.
US military officials are co-ordinating the recovery efforts with the UK police and Ministry of Defence. The authorities have secured the crash site and established a cordon.
