Jonathan Godfread, Insurance Commissioner for North Dakota, has been nominated by the US National Association of Insurance Commissioners to serve as the state insurance regulator on the nation’s new Air Ambulance and Patient Billing Advisory Committee. The Committee’s aim is to review options to improve the problem of transparency in the air medical transfer market and educating consumers about insurance options for such services, with the ultimate goal of preventing balance billing. In a statement, Godfread said he is hopeful that ‘the committee can craft meaningful recommendations that will allow Congress to take action and greatly reduce or eliminate the practice of surprise balance billing for air ambulance transports’. He added that he was ‘extremely disappointed’ by a recent decision taken by a federal judge in North Dakota that invalidated a part of Senate Bill 2231, which aimed to regulate air ambulance bills in the state; the judge in question invalidated the section of the bill that prohibits companies from balance billing customers after a flight.
