Wildfires in the Holy Jim Canyon of the Cleveland National Forest, US, have now charred around 6,200 acres of land. Started on 6 August, the blaze was only five per cent contained by 8 August, and continues to rage.
It has been reported that 10 helicopters and seven fixed-wing aircraft are complementing 385 firefighters that are attempting to contain the blaze – including the Global SuperTanker Boeing 747-400 firefighting aircraft.
So far, the wildfire is only thought to have destroyed several log cabins, though as it continues to advance into Riverside County mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for McVicker Canyon, Rice Canyon, Horsethief Canyon, Glen Eden, El Cariso Village, Sycamore Creek and Rancho Capistrano, along with the Ortega (74) Highway corridor from the Lookout restaurant to the Nichols Institute.
The firefighting effort has been severely hindered by the numerous other wildfire blazes that are currently affecting the state of California. The Los Angeles Times has reported that around 14,000 firefighters are currently tackling 15 wildfires across the state.
The fire is thought to be an arson, with a 51-year-old man currently being held on suspicion of starting the blaze.
