Maryland State Police rescues hiker in Frederick County
Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 3, based in Frederick, Maryland, responded to Chimney Rock.
A Maryland State Police helicopter crew assisted first responders from Frederick County Fire and Rescue with the rescue of an injured hiker in the Catoctin Mountain Park, Maryland, US on 17 September.
The hiker, a 48-year-old male, sustained injuries when he fell in a particularly rugged area of the forest, landing in a crevice 30 ft (nine metres) below. Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 3, based in Frederick, Maryland, responded to Chimney Rock after rescue personnel encountered treacherous conditions while attempting to extract the patient from a crevice. Pilots manoeuvred the AW139 helicopter into position 100 ft (30 m) above a rocky embankment and a trooper was lowered to the scene to assist with patient packaging.
A successful extraction using the helicopter hoist was conducted within 12 minutes and the patient was subsequently transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for evaluation.
Maryland State Police said the mission was an excellent example of the constant collaboration between local fire, EMS, law enforcement, technical rescue teams and the MSP Aviation Command.
