The launch of the Night Vision Aero-Medical System on 4 September signalled a radical transformation of the emergency health services in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), according to Senzo Mchunu, premier of the province. A ceremony was held to mark the launch at Richards Bay Airport.
The province’s EMS helicopters have been adapted for NVG use and pilots are undergoing training. This service is a first by a government department for KZN, South Africa and the African continent, said a representative for the province, adding: “Its availability will greatly improve access to and the delivery of advanced medical and trauma care to our patients and victims of motor vehicle collisions and those trapped in mountains.”
Mchunu expressed his appreciation for all the services involved in making the new service a reality, including the Red Cross Air Mercy Services and the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
According to the KZN Department of Health, the establishment of landing zones and the refurbishment of landing strips is underway. A number of hospitals are already accessible for night missions.
