Rescue helicopter operator Rega, based in Switzerland, has announced that it was called on to fly over 150 missions between 18 and 19 February. Two-thirds of those rescued by Rega had been injured taking part in winter sports, with Bernese Oberland and Central and Eastern Switzerland being the regions that the service was most frequently called out to. It also said that most of the casualties suffered shoulder and back injuries, bone fractures and hernias.
Rega said that it is prepared for busy days, especially when the weather is sunny and there are higher numbers of tourists on the slopes than usual. One of Rega’s teams, ‘Rega 17’, completed 14 call-outs over the weekend.
