Spanish SAR group venture to chilly heights for training

Spain’s Zaragoza-based 4th SAR Battalion (BIEM IV) recently completed a five-day training course in Pyrenees mountains. Around 300 personnel and 90 vehicles were deployed to perfect their SAR procedures in harsh conditions, with strong winds, sub-zero temperatures, snow and ice all pushing the troops to their limit.
Some of the simulated missions that the battalion took part in included searching for lost school children, assisting people living in isolated locations, creating of care stations for potential casualties and clearing access roads. Diving teams also braved the freezing cold waters of the Lanuza reservoir to train beneath the ice.
A helicopter search and rescue drill was also performed in the ski resorts of Astún and Formigal.
