Two Welsh tourists were evacuated from an Icelandic mountainside by a team of 30 rescue climbers and a helicopter after becoming stuck in freezing conditions with no equipment.
Michael Hughes and Dayne Stone set out to climb the Botnsfjall mountain on the evening of 15 April at around 20:00 hrs. The pair explained in a Facebook video post afterwards that, although they had no issues getting to the top of the mountain, their only path down was via a frozen waterfall. The pair had only taken torches with them on the hike, and realised it would be too dangerous to attempt to descend from the mountainside.
The emergency services were alerted by a friend who was waiting at the bottom of the mountain. A team of 30 rescue climbers was then dispatched to try to rescue the men. However, the climbers also found the ascent too dangerous, and shortly after, a rescue helicopter was then called, which hoisted the men off the mountainside. The pair are said to be unharmed, though suffering from colds.
