The Danville Life Saving Crew (DLSC) and Pittsylvania County Special Ops, based in Virginia, US, have announced the completion of their first rescue mission using a drone.
DLSC was dispatched to assist Bachelors Hall Volunteer Fire and Rescue after a man became trapped whilst trimming trees on 15 August. The man’s hand become trapped under a fallen tree on the south side of Dan River. A nearby resident heard him shouting and called for emergency services.
The services started to deploy boats to search for the man, and DLSC deployed its drone alongside. It was used to assist the ground crews, helping the boats to navigate the river and manoeuvre around rocks.
Around 20 minutes into the river search, the man was located on the bank. He was then freed from the fallen tree, loaded into a boat and brought upstream, where he was transferred to an ambulance and taken to hospital.
The DLSC has only recently acquired its drone technology, with a number of the team completing drone training on 28 July.
