Peter Dalby, originally from the UK, had been leading a group of runners on a 24km run on 18 August in Binna Burra when he split from the group to wash his feet in a waterfall. As he climbed out he realised he had taken the wrong path. Having been a member of the UK Marines since he was 18, Dalby then decided that the best course of action was to find higher ground.
A police helicopter was dispatched immediately and located Dalby, but was unable to winch him so passe his location onto Queensland Special Emergency Service workers and Run Goat Run, a community group. They were unable to track him down.
The next day another helicopter was dispatched, this time locating him and hoisting Dalby into the helicopter. He was then transferred to Gold Coast University Hospital.
