Four people were killed when a medical emergency flight crashed into the Caribbean near the Franco-Dutch island of St Maarten on 5 May. The Piper Cheyenne III, operated by Transports Aeriens Intercaraibes, was carrying a Greek Cypriot tourist who had suffered heart trouble while honeymooning on a cruise ship. It crashed four minutes after take-off, killing the sick passenger, the pilot, a doctor and a nurse. The plane was a replacement for another aircraft that had experienced mechanical problems upon arrival at St Maarten. At the time of writing, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
