The two crew members who were onboard an air ambulance that crashed in woodland near Morbegno, Italy, on 21 July both survived the incident with no serious injuries, according to reports. The EC145 helicopter, operated by Inaer Aviation Italia and flying for 118 Bergamo, hit the ground near to a preschool, which was closed for the holidays. The aircraft’s pilot, Augusto Stazzonelli, and helicopter technician, Stefano Turetta, were the only crew members onboard at the time of the crash and were taken to hospital by ground ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.
The helicopter had been dispatched to assist an injured motorcyclist. While the medical crew members – a doctor, a nurse and an alpine rescue technician – attended the patient at the scene, the helicopter took off in order to refuel at its base in Colico. During take-off, however, the aircraft is believed to have struck a high-voltage cable, causing it to enter an uncontrolled spin and descent. It was left severely damaged by the impact.
An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo (National Flight Safety Agency).
