The Australian Antarctic Division’s Polar Medicine Unit recently reported on the smooth transfer of a ‘seriously ill’ expeditioner from Australia’s Davis station in Antarctica by helicopter to the icebreaker Aurora Australis. The transfer occurred on the night of 22 March; the man, a member of the trades team, was least heard to be in a serious but stable condition in the vessel’s onboard medical facility.
“The team have been working through the weekend in very cold, below minus 10 degrees, and at times snowy conditions,” commented Robb Clifton, operations manager with the Division. “Before the patient was transferred we did several test runs to make sure the operation went as smoothly as possible.”
The voyage is expected to take about two weeks.
