On 24 January, the Tauranga, New Zealand-based Trustpower TECT Rescue helicopter operated by Philips Search and Rescue Trust flew to Omanawa Falls, south of Tauranga, to aid a 37-year-old man and his 12-year-old son, who had both fallen 100 m (330 ft) off a cliffside walking track. Reportedly, the boy fell first, and his father then fell while attempting to aid him. They both suffered serious injuries – the father to his back and shoulder, the boy to his head – and were winched from where they had fallen and airlifted to hospital in Tauranga for treatment.
