On 28 February, Marin County Fire sent a request to California Highway Patrol (CHP) Air Operations for aid in the retrieval of a hiker who had fallen approximately 70 ft (20 m) down a cliff, hitting rocks then falling into the surf. Amazingly, he was able to drag himself onto an outcropping of rocks. CHP helicopter H-30 was dispatched, landing on nearby bluffs, and after briefing a Marin County Fire captain hoisted the captain down to the outcropping in question. The 24-year-old hiker was packaged for extraction, then hoisted up to the helicopter and flown to Bear Valley visitor centre, where he was then transferred to a ground ambulance for transport to a nearby trauma centre.
