Now in its 35th year, Spectrum Aeromed continues to build air medical interiors around one central principle: the mission comes first. That mindset has guided the company’s evolution from foundational equipment systems to fully integrated, turnkey aircraft solutions.
This year also marks a personal milestone for Matthew Christenson, Vice President Account Executive for the Western USA, Western Canada, Central America, Caribbean, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand: 25 years with the company. For a quarter century, he has watched the air medical industry evolve. Aircraft platforms have advanced, medical technology has progressed, and operators have expanded across borders. Yet one principle has remained the same: listening.
“What has made my 25 years at Spectrum Aeromed meaningful is our commitment to truly understanding what each operator needs,” Christenson explained. “We’ve always focused on building solutions around the mission rather than assuming one configuration fits all.”
That mindset continues to shape every interior delivered today.
FROM BASIC LAYOUTS TO INTEGRATED SYSTEMS
When Christenson joined the company 25 years ago, air medical interiors were generally more basic and less integrated into the aircraft structure than the solutions delivered today. Designs were functional and effective, but today’s operators demand advanced integration, lighter materials, and flexible configurations.
As medical programs expanded and missions became more specialized, Spectrum Aeromed adapted. The team developed a comprehensive understanding of clinical workflows, equipment placement, weight optimization, and certification requirements.
Today, Spectrum Aeromed holds more than 90 supplemental type certificates (STCs) spanning over 450 aircraft models. This is a reflection of technical depth and long-term regulatory experience.
Medical crews operate in dynamic environments. Every cabinet location, monitor mount, oxygen control, and storage compartment must support efficient patient care under pressure. That level of refinement comes not only from engineering expertise, but from decades of collaboration with operators.
“Our experience has allowed us to refine how equipment is positioned and secured,” said Christenson. “It’s not just about installing components; it’s about designing around how clinicians actually move and work inside the aircraft.”

Air medical transport is demanding. Equipment must withstand vibration, repeated loading cycles, environmental stress, and continuous use. At the same time, operators often manage diverse fleets and changing mission profiles, requiring adaptable systems rather than rigid configurations. The company’s modular approach enables layout consistency across aircraft types while preserving flexibility for changing clinical needs.
Reliability is equally critical. Air medical programs cannot afford prolonged downtime. Equipment breakdowns disrupt operations and limit patient access to care. “When equipment eventually requires service, our goal is to respond quickly so operators can remain focused on their mission,” Christenson noted.

From its headquarters in Fargo, North Dakota, Spectrum Aeromed supports aircraft modification programs throughout North America and internationally. “Our team frequently travels to support installations and ensure integration is seamless,” Christenson said. “Strong communication with partners and customers is essential to delivering successful outcomes.”
