Gallery: Stronger together at sea: KNRM Ter Heijde and Dutch coast guard
Pauline Stuurman-Geluk describes a rescue exercise in the North Sea fine-tuning coordination between a Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM) lifeboat crew and a Netherlands Coastguard helicopter team
On a stormy winter afternoon, the crew of KNRM Ter Heijde and the Netherlands Coastguard brave the rough North Sea for a rescue exercise. As waves crash against the hull of the lifeboat and the wind howls across the deck, a powerful Coastguard helicopter approaches. Coordination between these two rescue teams is crucial when lives are on the line.
A challenging collaboration
The exercise is designed to fine-tune the coordination between the KNRM lifeboat crew and the helicopter team. Today’s drill focuses on safely hoisting a victim from the turbulent sea. The lifeboat rocks on the waves as crewmembers look up, awaiting their airborne counterparts.
With a loud roar, the helicopter’s rotors slice through the sky. The search and rescue (SAR) swimmer, clad in a bright orange suit, is lowered on the hoist. It’s a delicate operation: one wrong move could send him into the water or against the boat’s hull. But experience and training ensure a flawless execution. Once the rescuer stabilizes himself in the swaying motion, he secures the ‘victim’ – a KNRM crewmember playing the role – and signals for the hoist. Slowly, they are lifted to safety.
Trust and precision
This kind of operation demands seamless teamwork and absolute trust. The lifeboat crew must keep the vessel steady in the waves, while the helicopter pilot maintains perfect position. The winch operator in the helicopter controls the hoist with extreme precision.
For the KNRM volunteers, this isn’t an everyday experience, but in real emergencies, it can mean the difference between life and death. “Every second counts in a real rescue,” says one of the crewmembers. “These exercises help us work faster and safer when the pressure is on.”
Always ready
The exercise concludes successfully, and, with a final wave, the helicopter disappears toward the horizon. The lifeboat crew takes a deep breath, satisfied with the training. Exercises like this prove that when the situation is dire, the KNRM and the Coastguard stand ready – no matter the conditions – to save lives at sea.
