AI-powered mission system advances SAR capability in AW101 Norway trials
Integration trials in Norway demonstrate how AI-enabled onboard systems are moving from concept to operational use in demanding SAR environments
FlySight has completed initial integration tests of its OPENSIGHT Mission Console and Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) system aboard the AW101 helicopter, marking a key step in advancing search and rescue (SAR) operations in Norway.
The trial, conducted in collaboration with Norwegian authorities, combined FlySight’s onboard processing technology with neural models developed and trained locally. The system enables real-time analysis of electro-optical sensor data alongside geospatial information, enhancing situational awareness for crews operating in complex environments.
Designed for demanding SAR scenarios such as mountainous terrain and maritime missions, the solution aims to improve detection reliability, reduce false positives, and support more efficient deployment of SAR assets. Ultimately, it is intended to increase the likelihood of locating missing people during time-critical operations.
Initial flight trials took place at Sola Naval Air Station, with further testing and refinement planned through August to ensure alignment with operational requirements. The program also contributes to the development of a structured SAR data framework in Norway, supporting future scalability across a wider fleet.
