Air India, SkyDrive, and Suzuki to assess eVTOL medical logistics in India
The three companies will study whether electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft could support time-critical medical logistics in India’s congested urban environments
Air India, Japanese eVTOL developer SkyDrive, and Suzuki Motor Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the use of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for medical air logistics in India.
The agreement will see the three organizations undertake a feasibility study examining whether eVTOL aircraft could be used to transport time-sensitive medical supplies in urban areas, where road congestion can delay the movement of critical healthcare resources.
Rather than launching an operational service, the project will assess the technical, operational, and commercial viability of integrating advanced air mobility into India’s healthcare logistics network.
According to the companies, the study will combine SkyDrive’s aircraft technology with Air India’s aviation and airport operations expertise and Suzuki’s knowledge of the Indian market.
India’s rapidly expanding cities face significant traffic congestion, creating challenges for transporting urgent medical cargo. The partners said they would investigate whether eVTOL aircraft could provide a practical solution for last-mile emergency medical logistics by reducing transit times for high-priority healthcare deliveries.
Air India said it would contribute operational expertise, airport infrastructure knowledge, and stakeholder relationships to help evaluate a framework for safe and scalable eVTOL operations.
While the announcement marks another step towards integrating advanced air mobility into healthcare, the initiative remains at an early stage. The memorandum covers a feasibility study only, with no details released regarding operational timelines, regulatory approvals, aircraft deployment, or the types of medical cargo that may eventually be transported.
The agreement reflects growing international interest in applying advanced air mobility to healthcare logistics. Developers and operators worldwide are exploring how electric aircraft could complement existing air ambulance and logistics networks by transporting blood products, medicines, laboratory samples, organs for transplantation, and other time-critical medical supplies.
Elsewhere, SkyDrive has signed an agreement with Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and drone operator 7A Drones to advance preparations for an eVTOL medical transport service in the Penghu Islands.
