Airbus A400M joins European aerial response as wildfires overwhelm southwest France
France reinforces its aerial firefighting fleet with military airlift capability as European partners deploy aircraft and helicopters to support operations
France has reinforced its aerial firefighting response to the wildfires near Bordeaux by deploying a military Airbus A400M alongside its fleet of Dash 8-400MRE multi-role firefighting aircraft, as European partners continue to bolster operations under the European Union (EU) Civil Protection Mechanism.
The move came as wildfires in the Gironde region forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents and prompted France to request additional aerial resources from neighboring countries.
The A400M, equipped with a roll-on/roll-off retardant delivery system, conducted its first operational firefighting missions over the Lacanau fire over the weekend, marking the aircraft’s debut in an active wildfire response.
Designed primarily as a military transport aircraft, the platform has been adapted to deliver up to 20 tonnes of fire retardant, complementing France’s dedicated civil security fleet rather than replacing conventional waterbombers.
Supporting the military aircraft were the French government’s Dash 8-400MRE fixed-wing firefighting aircraft, which have played a central role in the response by laying down retardant lines ahead of advancing fires and protecting communities threatened by rapidly changing conditions.
The Dash 8-400MRE forms part of France’s multi-role aerial firefighting fleet and is capable of both retardant delivery and transport missions.
As conditions deteriorated, the EU activated additional assistance through its Civil Protection Mechanism. The European Commission said seven aircraft and four helicopters from Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, and Turkey had been deployed to France.
Among the reinforcements were two Croatian waterbombing aircraft, joining French assets in an effort to contain the fast-moving blazes. The EU also dispatched a liaison officer to Bordeaux and activated the Copernicus satellite mapping service to support operational planning.
