Australasian SAR workshop highlights AW139’s lifesaving role with Leonardo

Leonardo has hosted its first Australasian Aeromedical & Search and Rescue (SAR) Workshop in Melbourne, Australia, bringing together operators, clinicians, regulators, suppliers, and partners from across the region.

The event followed similar workshops held globally and aimed to provide a forum for sharing operational experience, showcasing new solutions, and identifying priorities for future capability development. More than 45 participants from 22 organizations attended, representing emergency medical services, SAR, law enforcement, fleet management, training, and operational support.

Discussions focused on shared priorities, particularly the primacy of safety and the challenges of sustaining 24/7 lifesaving missions in demanding environments. Participants also highlighted the importance of closer integration between original equipment manufacturers, system providers, medical teams, institutions, and frontline operators.

Key technical themes included navigation, mission systems, maintenance practices, and training, with the objective of improving operational effectiveness and outcomes for the communities served.

Onboard Systems Hoist & Winch was recently selected by Leonardo to supply its Pegasus next-generation rescue hoist for integration across Leonardo’s helicopter portfolio.
