With CBRN’s accreditation, BCEN underscores its role in advancing nursing excellence and enhancing patient care across specialized nursing fields

The US Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) has announced that its Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN) certification program has officially earned accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC), effective 1 August. This accreditation not only signifies the program’s high standards but also means that the CBRN is now an American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet-accepted nursing specialty certification.

Launched in October 2023, the CBRN certification was developed in partnership with the American Burn Association (ABA) and burn nursing professionals nationwide. More than 600 registered nurses (RNs) have since demonstrated their expertise in burn care and earned the prestigious CBRN credential.

BCEN CEO Janie Schumaker highlighted the significance of the accreditation, emphasizing that it ensures the CBRN program represents the highest quality standards. “Accreditation by ABSNC offers an important assurance to burn nurses, burn centers, and patients and their families – based on a rigorous and independent process – that the CBRN certification program meets or exceeds the highest quality standards,” she said.

The accreditation also marks a milestone for BCEN, as it now holds national accreditations for all six of its certification programs: Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN), Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), and the newly accredited CBRN.

“Now that the CBRN is accredited, all six BCEN certifications – the CEN, CPEN, TCRN, CFRN, CTRN, and CBRN – are both accredited and Magnet-accepted,” said Schumaker. “Achieving the ‘gold standard’ of national accreditation across our certification programs underscores BCEN’s commitment to offering high-value credentials that recognize the expertise of emergency, pediatric emergency, trauma, flight, critical care ground transport, and burn nurses, and promote their continued competence.”

BCEN announced in November 2024 that since the launch of its CRBN program, nearly 500 nurses had been board certified through it.
