The Toronto demo signals a key step for electric aviation in Canadian HEMS and special missions, supported by new infrastructure

BETA Technologies has completed a successful demonstration flight of its all-electric ALIA CX300 aircraft at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, in a move hailed as a milestone for sustainable aviation and a step forward for the operationalization of electric aircraft in Canada’s helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and special missions sectors.

The flight, conducted in collaboration with Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM), marked the ALIA’s first appearance in Toronto and highlighted the aircraft’s suitability for regional, medical, and special missions. With vertical and conventional takeoff and landing (VTOL/CTOL) variants, the ALIA platform is increasingly positioned to serve time-sensitive missions including air ambulance, cargo, and surveillance operations.

PortsToronto, owner and operator of Billy Bishop Airport, underlined the strategic importance of the development. “Electric aircraft technology will contribute to the future of aviation and promises air travel that is cleaner, greener, and quieter, which aligns with our strategic goals,” said RJ Steenstra, President and CEO. “The future of electric aviation is not about the distant future; it is about the here and now.”

In tandem with the flight, fixed-base operator Stolport announced the purchase of BETA’s Mini Cube charger – the first electric aircraft charger installed in Canada. Delivering 60kWh of multimodal, interoperable power, the unit can support both aircraft and electric ground vehicles and plays a key role in enabling airfields to adopt sustainable aviation infrastructure.

“The purchase of the BETA Mini Cube charger by Stolport at Billy Bishop... is a milestone for all of Canada,” said JR Hammond, Executive Director of CAAM. “This shows that advanced air mobility is moving beyond concept and demonstration into operational reality.”

BETA’s expanding North American charging network now includes more than 50 sites across the USA, supporting emergency response, defense, and medical operations in both urban and remote environments.

“Joining BETA’s global charging network is more than an operational upgrade – it is a commitment to being on the leading and greening edge of aviation in Canada,” said Nicolas Pappalardo, CEO of Stolport.

Last year Metro Aviation placed a deposit-backed order for up to 20 of Beta’s ALIA A250 VTOL aircraft.
