BT launches Drone SIM
Telecommunications company BT Group has launched the UK’s first Drone SIM to support beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flying
The SIM uses the EE mobile phone network to offer drone operators reliable connectivity when conducting critical missions. It is primarily intended for use by operators conducting operations such as search and rescue (SAR), medical logistics deliveries, or infrastructure inspection.
The SIM has been designed to be resistant to extreme temperatures and humidity, and can also function at high altitudes. It also enables operators to benefit from ultra-high-definition (UHD) video streaming at altitude.
BT stated that the SIM represents a ‘a dramatic shift’ for drone operators, from a world where they were ‘limited by line-of-sight radio transmission or local wi-fi’.
The launch of the Drone SIM follows a number of successful trials conducted by BT’s digital incubation subsidiary, Etc. These trials covered:
- The use of the SIM for critical infrastructure inspection, in partnership with drone technology provider sees.ai
- Testing BVLOS mission safety standards in an integrated airspace, alongside drone provider Skylift
- Conducting the first UK drone medical delivery trial with aerial logistics specialist Skyfarer.
Dave Pankhurst, Director of Drones, BT, said: “Following the successful trials of our Drone SIM over the past year, this announcement is a huge stepping stone in bringing drone connectivity to businesses across the UK, unlocking potential for more efficient processes, business transformation and, with the ability to power search and rescue missions and medical deliveries, helping to save lives.”
Devon & Cornwall Police, which serves the southwest of England, announced that it would launch its own drone program earlier this year.
