Dutch medical drone trial extended after 800 BVLOS flights
The year-long program tested medical deliveries in shared airspace, including environments used by trauma helicopters and other aviation operators
A Dutch medical drone trial has been extended into 2027 after completing more than 800 flights between two hospitals, providing further operational data on the integration of uncrewed aircraft into shared airspace.
The year-long program connected Isala hospital sites in Meppel and Zwolle along a fixed 22-kilometer route, with drones transporting medicines and blood samples between the facilities.
Flights took an average of around 14 minutes, compared with approximately 24 minutes by road in favorable traffic conditions.
Testing found no relevant effect on the quality of medicines transported by drone, including refrigerated products, while initial results indicated that blood samples were similarly unaffected.
A significant element of the program has been evaluating beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations in airspace also used by trauma and police helicopters, military aircraft, recreational aviation, and other drones.
Dutch air traffic control organization LVNL is among the partners involved in the trial, which has tested technologies designed to improve the electronic visibility and detection of drones.
The aircraft are tracked using 4G and 5G connectivity provided through KPN’s mobile network, while the program has also examined the use of transponders and radar integration.
Operational testing across different seasons identified strong winds as the primary restriction on flights. Despite this, the drones were reportedly available for operations between 92% and 95% of the time during the trial period.
The program is being conducted by the Netherlands’ Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management alongside ANWB (an air rescue operator), Isala, KPN and LVNL (an air traffic control service).
Following the initial results, testing will continue until mid-2027, with the next phase expected to include additional laboratory diagnostics, patient groups and pharmaceutical products.
The findings could ultimately support the development of additional medical drone corridors in the Netherlands and a wider network for transporting time-sensitive healthcare supplies.
