Dutch pharmacy network joins ANWB Medical Drones consortium
The addition of a regional pharmacy organization broadens research into using drones to transport medicines and other healthcare supplies
Regio Apotheek Vechtdal has joined the ANWB Medical Drones consortium, expanding a Dutch initiative exploring the use of uncrewed aircraft to transport medicines and other healthcare materials.
The pharmacy organization, based in Hardenberg in the eastern Netherlands, brings together independent community pharmacies, dispensing general practitioners, and a hospital pharmacy to provide pharmaceutical services across the Vechtdal region.
As part of the consortium, Regio Apotheek Vechtdal will contribute to research on integrating drones into healthcare logistics. The program brings together hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies, and other healthcare organizations to evaluate whether uncrewed aircraft can improve the speed, efficiency, and sustainability of transporting medical supplies.
Frank Bruggeman, Director and pharmacist at Regio Apotheek Vechtdal, said: “We believe that innovative logistics solutions such as medical drones can contribute to accessible, fast and future-proof pharmaceutical care for patients in our region.”
Medical drone projects have gained momentum across Europe as healthcare providers investigate their use for transporting medicines, blood products, laboratory samples, and other time-critical medical cargo, particularly in rural or hard-to-reach locations.
Elsewhere in the sector, Guyana’s Ministry of Health recently completed a drone delivery of medical supplies to the remote Moraikobai Health Center, while a collaborative study involving the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), NASA Langley Research Center, and LifeNet Health successfully transported human kidneys by drone beyond visual line of sight.
