Elbit to upgrade Romanian Pumas
Israeli aerospace firm Elbit will supply mission equipment and payloads to the Romanian military’s IAR 330 Puma helicopter fleets
The equipment will be provided under three contracts awarded to Elbit by the Romanian government.
Under the first contract, Elbit will integrate its electro-optic Spectro XR intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) payload onto a fleet of Pumas operated by the Romanian Navy. Work on this contract will be performed over the coming year.
Under the second contract, Elbit will supply its electronic warfare suite – comprising a radar warning receiver, laser warner, infrared missile warner and countermeasure dispenser – to a Romanian partner, for integration onboard six Pumas. The contract will be delivered over three years, and is a follow-on from similar contracts to install the system on other Romanian aircraft types. It will also include an option for the system to be installed on six more Pumas.
The third contract will involve the installation of the Spectro XR, the fitting of helmet display systems, BrightNite night vision systems and the provision of a mission package including smart displays, digital maps and reconnaissance systems, on Romanian search and rescue helicopters.
The IAR 330 Puma is a multipurpose helicopter capable of serving in a range of roles, including in anti-tank, maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and medical evacuation operations. The Romanian Armed Forces currently operates around 57 aircraft of this type.
