Dr Tom Konig, a doctor working on London’s Air Ambulance who performed open-heart surgery on a teen who later died from injuries sustained from a knife attack, has issued a plea to Londoners to end knife crime. In an emotional statement, Dr Konig described his experience in trying to save the teenager’s life, and then having to tell the boy’s mother that ultimately, his attempts to resuscitate her son had been unsuccessful.
In his statement, Dr Konig said: “Another teenager killed by the hand of another on the streets of London. Another life lost, another family torn apart, another perpetrator set to spend time imprisoned to dwell on their crimes. No one wins, everyone loses. Enough is enough. It is time to put your knives down. Find another way to argue and to fight, now, before it is too late.”
London’s paramedics, whether working on the ground ambulance or in the air, wear stab-proof vests to call-outs, showing that not even the medics arriving to save a life are safe from offenders touting knives.
