Estonia selects BAM and Trakka Systems for AW139 helicopter mission upgrade

Three Leonardo AW139 helicopters operated by Estonia’s Police and Border Guard Board will receive upgraded mission systems to improve SAR, maritime surveillance, and border security capabilities

Estonia’s Police and Border Guard Board will upgrade the mission capabilities of its three Leonardo AW139 helicopters under a four-year contract awarded to BAM and Trakka Systems.

The program, Purchase of Helicopters SAR Mission Equipment and System Integration, will equip the aircraft with new mission systems to support search and rescue (SAR), maritime surveillance, border patrol, and law enforcement operations.

The upgrades include gyro-stabilized electro-optical and infrared sensors, a mission management system, maritime tracking tools, digital video recording, long-term evolution (LTE) connectivity, and airborne phone detection technology to support SAR missions.

Financed through the European Union Cohesion Fund project Increasing Maritime Rescue Capability, as well as the Estonian state budget, the project aims to improve crew situational awareness, operational coordination, and mission response.

BAM specializes in aircraft maintenance, avionics, and mission system integration, while Trakka Systems supplies airborne surveillance and mission management technologies for public safety, defense, and SAR operators.

The upgraded AW139 fleet will support Estonia’s maritime and border security requirements, as well as missions including missing person searches, vessel monitoring, and incident response.
