Film shows behind the scene of air ambulance rescue
London’s Air Ambulance Charity takes Londoners behind the scenes of their life-saving work to mark Air Ambulance Week as they aim to raise awareness of the work they do
The charity has released a film about David’s story of being rescued by London’s Air Ambulance. David had been in London with a friend on a Saturday in October. Whilst waiting for a train, a man they did not know punched David in the head. The single blow caused David to fall to the floor, hitting his head hard against the ground and causing his heart to stop.
London’s Air Ambulance advanced trauma team were dispatched and Dr Cosmo Scurr and Paramedic Sam Margetts arrived on scene by rapid response car in minutes. David had suffered a traumatic brain injury and needed the immediate treatment only London’s Air Ambulance could provide. The medics stabilised David on the concourse, inducing him into a coma to protect his brain from further injury and buy him time to get to hospital.
Every second counts for critically injured patients
Medical Director of London’s Air Ambulance, Tom Hurst, said: “When every second counts for a critically injured patient London’s Air Ambulance is there, ready to provide rapid response cutting-edge care. David’s story takes supporters to the frontline of our work, showing the side of London’s Air Ambulance you hope you never see.
“Over 32 years, our crews have built up the expertise that allows us to perform the most complex procedures at scene so we can give patients like David the very best chance of survival. We know that time is precious when a life is on the line. Should the worst happen, London’s Air Ambulance will be there.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, added: “London’s Air Ambulance does an incredible job, with their ability to get to critically injured patients within minutes helping to save countless lives. The charity relies on the generosity of Londoners to continue providing this vital service, so this Air Ambulance Week I urge Londoners to do what they can to support them.”
