FireSat protoflight launches, advancing global wildfire monitoring
Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space have announced an upcoming on-orbit demonstration of their satellite constellation, designed to address the growing global threat of wildfires
Earth Fire Alliance, the nonprofit coalition providing global wildfire data, announced that the FireSat protoflight spacecraft successfully launched on 14 March via SpaceX’s Transporter-13 rideshare mission. In partnership with Muon Space, the spacecraft has established communication with Muon Mission Operations. FireSat represents the collaborative efforts of hundreds of first responders and scientists, with leadership and support from Google, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Environmental Defense Fund, and others.
The protoflight mission sets the stage for the operational FireSat constellation, which will provide near real-time global coverage with a 20-minute revisit rate for wildfires. The demonstration will validate the FireSat system’s performance, including its multispectral payload and data delivery infrastructure.
Brian Collins, Executive Director of the Alliance, commented: “The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year underscore the urgent need for real-time, high-fidelity infrared data to protect lives, communities, ecosystems, and economies. The launch of the FireSat protoflight is a critical step toward a future in which wildfires are better understood, monitored, and mitigated.”
Jonny Dyer, CEO of Muon Space, added: “By integrating cutting-edge remote sensing capabilities, artificial intelligence (AI) driven analytics, and deep wildfire expertise, FireSat is redefining how we leverage space-based technology to provide critical, real-time insights in the fight against extreme wildfires.”
Earth Fire Alliance has established an early adopter program with fire agencies, scientists, and tech companies to refine FireSat data products and delivery methods. The Alliance collaborates with fire agencies to understand their workflows and works with technology partners to integrate FireSat data into their systems. Protoflight data will help finalize distribution processes for operational FireSat data, aiming for smooth integration into existing applications.
Earth Fire Alliance’s first three operational FireSats are scheduled to launch in 2026, with the full constellation of 50-plus satellites to be built out by 2030.
