Helicopter and plane fighting blaze at southern Turkish port
The fire started after earthquake aftershocks
A helicopter and a plane are currently engaged in fighting a renewed blaze at the southern Turkish port of Iskenderun, after it was extinguished on Tuesday, according to the Turkish Agriculture Ministry.
The port was closed on Monday after the first fire broke out after massive earthquakes hit the region. Freight liners diverted vessels to other ports.
The fire started at 17:00hrs local time on Monday, when a container at the international port toppled over from the aftershocks of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
The Ministry of National Defence said on Tuesday evening that they were fighting to extinguish the fire.
Turkish shipping agency Tribeca said on Tuesday that some of the cargo area of Limak port at the Iskendrun complex was still on fire and the terminal was closed to all operations until further notice.
It is not yet known how long recovery efforts will take and when the port can undergo a full damage inspection.
