HeliOperations expands AW139 training with Reiser flight simulator and hoist system
New simulation systems will support integrated pilot and hoist operator training for German Navy helicopter crews under a seven-year program
HeliOperations has signed an agreement with Reiser Simulation and Training to acquire an AW139 flight training device (FTD) and a stationary hoistAR extended reality training system, expanding its rotary-wing training capabilities for military aircrews.
The agreement was announced at the Farnborough International Airshow and will support HeliOperations’ seven-year Basic Flight Training program for German Navy pilots transitioning to the NH90 Sea Lion and NH90 Sea Tiger helicopters.
The AW139 simulator will be built on Reiser’s Next Generation-FTD platform and replicate the helicopter in its Phase 8 configuration. Designed with a modular architecture, the device can be tailored to meet specific aircraft, mission, and training requirements.
Alongside the simulator, REISER will supply its stationary hoistAR system, which uses extended reality technology to train helicopter hoist operators in a range of operational scenarios. The two systems can be used independently or linked together to provide integrated training for pilots and hoist crews during simulated missions.
According to the companies, the new equipment will complement HeliOperations’ classroom instruction and live day-and-night flight training using its AW139 fleet, allowing more mission elements to be rehearsed in a synthetic environment before flight.
The simulator will incorporate a high-fidelity AW139 flight model provided through Reiser’s collaboration with Leonardo Helicopters, together with night vision goggles (NVG) capability, a six-channel visual display system, and motion and vibration cueing to increase training realism.
The platform has been designed to support qualification up to EASA Flight Training Device Level 3 and FAA Flight Training Device Level 7, while also aligning with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s evolving capability-based framework for flight simulation training devices.
Reiser recently received German Federal Aviation Office approval for its H145 XR-SIM mixed reality simulator, enabling the system to enter operational use for helicopter pilot training.
