HM Coastguard begins work on new seasonal SAR bases

HM Coastguard has begun construction on its new seasonal search and rescue (SAR) base at Oban Airport, Scotland – part of a wider plan to boost summer response capability under the UK Search and Rescue Second Generation (UKSAR2G) program.

The Oban base will replace the originally proposed Fort William site, which was found to be unviable. A second seasonal base will open in Carlisle, with both sites scheduled to become operational in 2026.

Each base will host one SAR-configured AW189 helicopter, operating daily from April to September between 9am and 9pm, with a 15-minute readiness time. The facilities at Oban will include a modern hangar, operational planning rooms, crew rest areas and offices.

Construction officially began on 6 October, marked by a ground-breaking ceremony attended by representatives from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Bristow Helicopters, which operates the UK’s SAR helicopter fleet.

Chief Coastguard Paddy O’Callaghan said the new bases represent “a huge step forward” in expanding HM Coastguard’s capacity during peak demand periods. “The additional aircraft will provide greater flexibility across our national network and enhance our ability to respond quickly to those in need,” he said.

Steve Bentley, Senior Responsible Owner for the UKSAR2G program, added: “People are alive today because a HM Coastguard helicopter came to their aid. These new seasonal bases will strengthen that response, ensuring help reaches those in trouble faster, particularly in areas popular for outdoor activities.”

When complete, the Oban base will host specialist SAR crews and an AW189 helicopter on standby for taskings throughout the summer months – further bolstering the UK’s world-class maritime and coastal SAR capability.
