Illinois police department takes steps towards drone-as-first-responder program
The DFR program will enable police in Normal, Illinois, to deploy uncrewed aircraft ahead of ground units, providing real-time intelligence to improve responder and public safety
The Normal Police Department in the US state of Illinois has sought approval from the town council to launch a drone-as-first-responder (DFR) program, enabling uncrewed aircraft to assess incidents before officers arrive on scene.
The department was awarded USD$50,000 in funding at a recent council meeting to purchase a drone for the initiative. Officials say the technology will improve situational awareness and enhance the safety of both the responding officers and the public.
Implementation will begin immediately, as the department already has 17 Part 107 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-certified drone operators and is preparing policies and procedures to support the program.
Dallas Police Department recently launched an eight-drone DFR network in partnership with Dallas Fire-Rescue to provide aerial intelligence before human responders arrive.
