Italian Army receives final NH90 multirole helicopter

The final NH90 multirole helicopter from an order of 60 aircraft was delivered to the Italian Army on 25 November

The aircraft was assembled at Leonardo’s Venice Tessera facility, and handed over at a ceremony attended by officials from the army and its Aviation Unit.

The Italian Army is one of the largest operators of the multirole helicopter, with a total of 31,096 flight hours logged to date across its fleet. Its NH90 fleet has the NATO designation ‘UH-90A’ The UH90A fleet is distributed across the army’s three Aviation Unit bases nationwide.

The aircraft are used for a range of mission types, including medical evacuation, hoist operations, cargo resupply, tactical troop transport, logistical support, special operations, and light tactical vehicle transport. The aircraft have also been used to support civilian disaster relief and emergency response efforts in recent years.

Carlo Gualdaroni, Chief Business Officer at Leonardo Helicopters, said: “We’re extremely excited to achieve this crucial milestone with the Italian Army. This result is testament to the long-established effective partnership between industry and the operator to deliver the required capabilities and to support its use.”

Dino Marcellino spoke more about how the NH90 was employed by Italian Army’s Aviation Division in the March 2022 AirMed&Rescue.
