Japan Coast Guard plane collides with airliner
Five people have died after a Japan Coast Guard (JCG) plane collided with an airliner at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport
According to news agency Jiji Press, the Coast Guard plane was MA-722, a Bombardier Dash-8 usually stationed at JCG Haneda Air Base.
At the time of the crash, MA-722 was departing for Niigata Prefecture to provide emergency support in response to Monday’s earthquake in central Japan.
Six people were onboard the plane during the incident, which occurred at around 17:40 hrs local time on 2 January. Five are now confirmed to have died, while the sixth is reportedly alive but injured.
The airliner which collided with MA-722 managed to land on Haneda Airport’s Runway C while on fire. All 379 passengers and crew onboard were successfully evacuated.
Pratt & Whitney named Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Aero Engines as its second approved maintenance, repair and overhaul facility for the GTF engine in Japan in March 2023.
