Leonardo expands helicopter simulator production in Italy
The 6,000m2 expansion at Sesto Calende will increase Leonardo’s capacity to build up to five helicopter simulators simultaneously, with initial systems destined for operators in Italy and Asia
Leonardo has opened a 6,000m2 facility at Sesto Calende in northern Italy, expanding its capacity to develop and manufacture helicopter flight simulators for civil and military operators worldwide.
The building can accommodate up to five simulators simultaneously, bringing engineering, design, production, assembly, integration, and testing under one roof. Systems include cockpit replicas mounted on motion platforms or fixed bases, surrounded by panoramic visual domes.
Leonardo’s workforce at Sesto Calende grew by more than 30% between 2022 and 2025, reaching over 610 employees. The team includes engineers, software developers, technicians, pilots, and program managers.
Previous projects developed at the site include an A129 Mangusta simulator for Italian Army Aviation, an HH139 simulator for the Italian Air Force, and an NH90 simulator for the Italian Navy. The first systems manufactured in the new building will serve operators in Italy and Asia.
The expansion will complement existing industrial partnerships, including Rotorsim, Leonardo’s joint venture with CAE, while supporting future domestic and international programs.
Stefano Villanti was recently appointed Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters.
