Luxembourg to receive medical transport drone
A new drone designed to carry blood samples, transfusions and medical equipment is expected to enter service this summer, operated by Luxembourg Air Ambulance
Swiss drone company RigiTech has specially designed a drone for transporting medical samples, supplies, and equipment around Luxembourg. The drone will be operated by Luxembourg Air Ambulance (LAA) personnel and is set to begin service from July. The new addition is part of a project named Griffin, which is supported by Post Luxembourg, Santé Services and Laboratoires Réunis.
Specially built for medical transportation, the drone has a carrying compartment equivalent to 15L and can fly with up to 3kg onboard. It has the capacity to travel up to 100km on a single charge and to battle through winds of up to 54km per hour. On top of this, the air carrier is expected to slash 95% of carbon emissions compared with road transport.
Having arrived in Luxembourg in May, the drone is now ready for testing, with certification flights expected to take place in June.
In February, RigiTech announced the Netherlands-based Medical Drone Service as the latest operator of its Eiger uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV).
